The neon sign of Pine Ridge Lanes flickered as Peggy smoothed her emerald dress, its sequins catching the glow of the parking lot. She’d imagined candlelight, maybe a walk by the lake—not the clatter of bowling pins. Geraldo leaned against his truck, grinning. “Best nachos in town here,” he said, tossing a playful wink.
Her magic hummed, a warm tingle beneath her skin. Clueless, she thought. With a flick of her wrist, she whispered an incantation. Geraldo’s flannel shirt shimmered, replaced by a gown of blush silk. Puffed sleeves ballooned at his shoulders; the sweetheart necline dripped with faux pearls. He gaped at his reflection in the truck’s window. “Peggy, what the—?!”
“Formalwear’s required for my date nights,” she said, twirling to show off her own dress. “You’ll bowl in that. Get a ‘good’ score, and I’ll reverse it.” She leaned close, her voice a velvet threat. “Or do you plan to wear pink to the hardware store tomorrow?”
Geraldo’s face flushed. The alley’s regulars snickered as he fumbled with a lavender bowling ball. Strikes were impossible in a corset, but he managed a 114—mediocre, but earnest. Peggy smirked. “Not good enough.”
Peggy snapped her fingers. His dress poofed into a ballroom-worthy gown—layers of tulle, crystal accents, and strappy sandals (still technically bowling shoes). “Try again,” she said sweetly.
He scored a 163 on the second game. The scoreboard blinked. Peggy waved her hand. The dress dissolved, leaving Geraldo in his original clothes.
“Wouldn’t make me wear dresses tomorrow… right?” he ventured.
“All day, every day,” Peggy replied, nibbling a nacho.
"You're kidding."
"Makeup and accessories, too," she continued
Geraldo gulped.
